WHAT ARE ANGIOSPERMS?
The term ‘Angiosperms’ is coined by amalgamation of two Greek words ‘angeion’ (vessel, container, or casing) and ‘sperma’ (seed). Angiosperms are vascular, seed bearing flowering plants whose seeds are enclosed in fruits. The important characters include ovules within carpel, pollen grains germinating on stigma, double fertilization resulting in triploid endosperm, highly reduced male and female gametophytes, sieve tubes with companion cells, and presence of vessels in xylem. The flower is a characteristic part of their reproductive structure; and produced after completing the vegetative phase. The flower typically is a bisexual structure with four whorls; outer two accessary and inner two essential. The accessary whorl includes outer calyx followed by corolla, whereas essential whorls are carpels surrounded by stamens. Angiosperms are a group of highly advanced and specialized plants that make up the majority of plant life on Earth. They are most diverse group of plants with more than 300000 species distributed in almost all possible habitats on the Earth. They vary in many respect i.e. size, form, structure, mode of nutrition, mode of reproduction, pollination mechanism, seed dispersal, wide ecological tolerance, life span, etc. They are considered to be evolved between 250-200 million years ago from some Gymnosperms like ancestors. Our agriculture and economy is almost entirely dependent on angiosperms. Majority of our food and a significant amount of fodder comes from angiosperms. They are major economic resource in the form of timber, paper and pulp, fibers, pharmaceutics, ornamental, minor forest produce, etc.
